Tour 1: Itinerary Canelos - Rio Bobonaza - Sarayaku

Tour in canoe and sports plane - sustainable tourism

This tour includes the visit of the Ecological Foundation Tiuti Wally in the Mawka Llakta sector of the Pastaza Province. You can only get there in canoe or by sports plane. Sarayaku is a Quechua Indian community which still keeps alive its native culture, traditions and customs in the interior of the jungle. Its pure primary rainforest does not suffer from contamination or destruction and the air is pure. Sarayaku has successfully been fighting against the invasion of oil companies in its territory for about 9 years.

The temperatures are between 250 C and 300C at daytime and 180C to 220C at night.
The climate is tropical. The altitude is about 400 m above sea-level.

DAY 1: We leave Baños early in the morning heading for Puyo. During our journey we will see the various cascades of the “Route of Cascades” and we will be able to observe the change in the vegetation as we are descending from the mountains to the lowlands of the Orient. From Puyo we travel by private vehicle to the parish of Canelos to embark on a motorized canoe. On our voyage we will see native houses of the Kichua Indians that live on the banks of the Bobonaza River. In the afternoon we arrive at the Foundation Tiuti Wally in the Mawka Llakta sector of the Pastaza province where we take lodging in rustic cabins typical for the area.

DAY 2: In the morning we go for a walk to get to know some of the primary forest with its insects, medicinal and other plants. In the afternoon there is time to explore the surroundings of the cabins.

DAY 3: We visit the traditional ‘kitchen gardens’ and watch the harvest of the yucca which is staple food in the jungle and which is also used to prepare the ‘chicha’. During our stay in Sarayaku we will also be able to watch the preparation of this traditional drink in the jungle. In the afternoon we will visit the village centre, where we can have a look at the arts and crafts made by the women of the community with materials of the area.

DAY 4: In the morning we use local materials to produce our own handicrafts like bracelets, necklaces, string bags, baskets or pottery (only women). We spend the afternoon with our host family, talking or doing sports, etc. In the evening we will be offered a farewell drink, the hot Guayusaso.

DAY 5: We watch a presentation of a typical dance performed by members of the Foundation Tiuti Wally accompanied by the sound of drums. We enjoy a typical dish (maito) and a chat with members of the community while waiting for the arrival of the sports planes. The flight to the village Shell on the road Baños - Puyo will take about 25 minutes. From Shell we return to Baños.
