Tour 2: Kichua community of Sarayaku (province of Pastaza)

Tour by sports plane - adventure and exploration of the Amazon jungle

This tour includes the visit of the Ecological Foundation Tiuti Wally in the Mawka Llakta sector of the Pastaza Province. You can only get there in canoe or by sports plane. Sarayaku is a Kichua Indian community which still keeps alive its native culture, traditions and customs in the interior of the jungle. Its pure primary rainforest does not suffer from contamination or destruction and the air is pure. Sarayaku has successfully been fighting against the invasion of oil companies in its territory for about 9 years.

The temperatures are between 250 C and 300C at daytime and 180C to 220C at night.
The climate is tropical. The altitude is about 400 m above sea-level.

DAY 1: We leave Baños at 8:00 am heading for the airport of the village Shell. At about 10:00 am we depart from Shell by sports plane for a 25-minute flight with beautiful views of the green landscape of the Ecuadorian Amazon region.
On our arrival in Sarayaku we are accommodated in a typical cabin of the region. We can relax and have a bath in the small river. In the evening there is time to talk with the guide about the Ecological Foundation Tiuti Wally, the life in the jungle and the program of the following days.

DAY 2: During a 4/5 hour walk to the River Kapawari we will get information about medicinal, edible and timber plants. Our accommodation is in a traditional house where we can relax from our walk and explore the surroundings.

DAY 3: We explore the primary forest to watch insects, butterflies, birds, etc.

DAY 4: We go for a 2/3-hour-walk in the primary forest while the guide explains about the natural resources used by the Indians, e.g. how they make a rucksack out of the materials of the jungle. We build a shelter near a small river, the River Wiracaspi, for the night. In the afternoon we go fishing to enrich our dinner of heart of palm.

DAY 5: We return to the domicile of the Foundation Tiuti Wally. In the afternoon you can go in for some sports with people of the foundation, you can go swimming or simply relax.

DAY 6: In the early morning at about 4 o’clock we take part in the ceremony of the Guayusa (a traditional drink of the Kichua Indians made of medicinal plants to purify the body) and listen to Indian stories and ancient legends accompanied by the sound of the drums. After breakfast there is a presentation of a typical dance of the Kichua of Sarayaku. Later we enjoy a typical Indian dish (maito) and we can chat with the Kichua people while waiting for the sports plane which will take us back to Shell.
