Who are we?
The Ecological Foundation Tiuti Wally is a private non-profit association (NGO), located in the sector Mawka Llakta in the Parish Sarayaku, Canton Puyo, Pastaza Province.
The Ecological Foundation Tiuti Wally has been legally recognized by the Presidency of the Republic of Ecuador on 22nd August 2007 (Ministerial Order No 670), and by CODENPE (the National Executive Secretary of the Council of Development of the Nationalities and Peoples of Ecuador).
The head office is located in the Community of Sarayaku in the Mawka Llakta sector which is in the interior of the Amazone jungle to where you can only get by plane or boat. By air it is a flight of 25 minutes in small sport planes leaving from Shell. By canoe the journey takes about one and a half days and by motorcanoe it takes 5 to 6 hours depending on the water level of the river.
The expression TIUTI WALLY is quechua and means: “Bird with big eyes that leaves at dusk to catch bats in the air.” During the day the bird stays in the top of a dry tree and waits for dusk while eating other flying animals that pass by. The female bird is much bigger than the male. Its cry is a shrill: “que que-que-que-que-que-que”.
